When should you use summarizing in academic writing?
When you want to show the entire main argument from a particular article rather than a smaller piece of information. Paraphrasing is more common because you use small bits of expert information to support your writing, but you can use summarizing as well (particularly for longer papers).
Describe a counter/argument and refutation, and what is the purpose of this?
A counter-argument introduces an opposing argument (from the other side of the issue) and a refutation explains why that opposing argument is not as good as your argument.
The purpose is to strengthen your argument by acknowledging the opposite view and fighting back against it.
