This eclipse occurs during a new moon.
Solar eclipse
What is the main cause for Earth's seasons?
Earth's tilted axis
How many lunar phases do we have?
8
What is the difference between latitude and longitude?
Latitude lines go side to side, longitude lines go up and down.
What is the main cause of tides in the ocean?
Moon's gravitational pull
Describe the umbra and penumbra of a shadow.
Umbra-center, smaller, darker; penumbra-edges, larger, lighter
What are the differences between direct and indirect sunlight?
Direct-hotter, does not travel as far, has more energy; indirect-cooler, travels farther, loses energy during travel
Define the words waxing and waning.
Waxing-growing larger, brighter; waning-growing smaller, dimmer
What is the latitude degree of the equator?
0 degrees
Describe the alignment of a neap tide versus and spring tide.
Neap tide-Sun, Earth, Moon at 90 degree angle; spring tide-Sun, Earth, Moon at 180 degree angle (straight line)
Why do we not have an eclipse with every full and new moon?
The moon's orbit is tilted and its shadow misses the Earth most of the time.
Why do areas in the Northern Hemisphere have opposite seasons to areas in the Southern Hemisphere?
When the Northern Hemisphere leans toward the Sun, the Southern Hemisphere leans away, and vice versa.
Oval (ellipse)
What is the highest number of latitude? Where are these areas on the globe?
90 degrees; North and South Poles
Why are spring tides deeper than neap tides?
In a spring tide, the Sun and Moon work together to pull on the Earth, making tides deeper.
What causes the Moon to turn red during a total lunar eclipse?
Gases and dust in Earth's atmosphere make the Moon appear red during a total lunar eclipse.
A collision with a larger object, most likely an asteroid.
Why do some full moons appear extra large in the sky?
Since the Moon does not orbit in a perfect circle, it sometimes gets closer (and farther away) from the Earth. When it is closer, it appears much larger.
Prime Meridian
How many high tides and low tides does one area experience every day?
Two high tides and two low tides every day
If the Moon's orbit was not titled, at least how many total eclipses would we have every month?
2. One total solar (with a new moon) and one total lunar (with a full moon).
The planet Mercury has a tilt of 0.03 degrees, compared to Earth's tilt of 23.5 degrees. Explain how Mercury's seasons (if it had them) would be different from Earth's.
Mercury's seasons would remain the same all year because neither of Mercury's hemispheres are leaning into or away from the Sun.
Why do we always see the same side of the Moon? Why do we never see the back?
The Moon rotates at the same speed as the Earth, so when the Earth makes one full rotation, the Moon has made one full rotation as well.
If an area has a high latitude number, what type of climate would they have? Why?
Cold, because they are closer to the poles.
Why does one area experience a high tide while another area experiences low tide? Explain how this works.
The area that experiences high tide has water levels that rise. The water that rises in this area comes from somewhere else, causing that area's water levels to drop.
