Zander thinks we need to slow down in the hallways and wants to know if other students agree. Zander surveys a random sample of 25 students and find that 14 agree with him. The next week, Zander surveys another 25 students and find that 7 agree with him. Does this make you more or less confident in your prediction? Explain.

Less confident, because (answers vary)...the second data set found that only 7/25 students agree with Zander vs. the prior week, when double that, 14/25 students agreed with Zander. More data would need to be collected to decide how many students on average agree with Zander.

Three siblings share weekly chores and randomly choose which of the three main chores (take out the trash, do the dishes, and vacuum the rugs) they will do using a spinner. About how many weeks out of the year will each sibling take out the trash? (*Hint: There are 52 weeks in a year.)

~17 weeks...Assuming that the spinner is fair, each sibling will have an equal possibility of getting to take out the trash. 52 weeks in a year divided by 3 siblings is 17 1/3 weeks per sibling. We round 17 1/3 down and add an approximate symbol to show that this is not exactly the answer.

Agatha wonders who walks the furthest to school at her school: the 6th, 7th, or 8th graders. She selects a random sample of 30 students from 6th grade, 30 students from 7th grade, and 30 students from 8th grade. Then she asked the student how far they walk in miles. Agatha's friend, Chantal, looks at Agatha's data and says that there are only 90 kids at Agatha's school. Do you agree with Chantal? Explain your thinking.

Answers will vary:

NO! Chantal needs to remember that Agatha only took random samples of a larger population of students in each grade level.

Marcelle (Marce) Barkley Herz a 10+ year teacher, avid skier and runner, who started Sky Tavern!

Q3(right side of box): 35

Maximum(right whisker): 45

1) What is the median?

A teacher has two random spinners to help her randomly choose students in her class. The first spinner represents the table numbers and has the numbers 1 through 9 on it. The second spinner represents the seat numbers and has the numbers 1 through 4 on it.

1) How many total combinations are there?

2) What is the probability of seats 3 or 4 at table 3 being chosen?

1) 36

2) 1/18

Situation: Agatha wonders who walks the furthest to school at her school: the 6th, 7th, or 8th graders. She selects a random sample of 30 students from 6th grade, 30 students from 7th grade, and 30 students from 8th grade. Then she asked the student how far they walk in miles.

Explain what you would look for if the 3 dot plots for that data were to show a "big difference". Be specific about the types of data you would look for.

Example answers:

1) MADs differing by 1 or more.

2) Medians differing by 1 or more.

3) Few outliers in the data would help, but can't be the only difference.
