List two characteristics of acids
corrosive sour low pH reacts with metals conducts electricity
100
List two characteristics
Slippery Bitter high pH conducts electricity
100
What pH is exactly neutral?
water!
100
What pH does rain have to be to be “Acid rain?”
less than 5
200
To be an acid, a solution must have a pH lower than....
7
200
Do basic solutions have more OH- ions or H+ ions?
OH- ions
200
What color is a neutral solution when you add universal indicator?
green
200
What causes “Acid Rain”?
Emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) from power plants, cars and factories. Natural sources like volcanoes, forest fires and lightning strikes also add to the man-made pollution. SO2 and NOx become acids when they enter the atmosphere and react with water vapor.
300
What ion is associated with acids?
H+ or Hydrogen or hydronium (H3O+)
300
Which pH level is just a little bit basic? pH=7 pH=14 pH=8
pH=8
300
When an acid and a base mix, what two things do they produce?
water and a salt
300
What are some problems caused by acid rain?
damage forests, weaken trees, destroys monuments
400
Which one is an acid? NH3 HCl NaOH
HCl
400
Which one is a base? LiOH HNO3 H2SO4
LiOH
400
When water (H2O) dissociates (breaks apart), what two ions does it become?
OH- and H+
400
What can our country do to help reduce acid rain?
limits on the power industry to reduce annual emissions of SO2 and NOx. Drive less, use less electricity, use cleaner more green sources of energy
500
What color is an acid when you add universal indicator?
Red or orange
500
What is the basic solution called that we use to unclog our drains?
DRANO!
500
If I have a solution that has 156 molecules of OH-, how many molecules of H+ do I need to make the solution neutral?
156
500
What kinds of natural "bases" exist that help neutralize acid rain?
Limestone rocks
