How do you add an effect to an object?
Select the object, then go to the Effects menu and choose from the
list.
While drawing with the Pen tool, how do you exit a path?
Hold Option/Alt or Command/Ctrl and click away from the path
What are some of the default document presets available when
creating a new document in Illustrator?
Letter, A4, Web-Large, Postcard, etc.
Why is a bleed space helpful when printing your artwork from
Illustrator?
Bleed space allows you to create color that extends past the edges
of your artboard. Then when your project is cut out, there is no
chance of white gaps appearing at the edges of the page.
How do you expand an object so its appearance becomes real vectors?
Select the object, then go to Object > Expand
What happens when you are in Isolation mode?
Only the object/group/layer you have isolated can be edited. The
other layers are greyed out.
Why is it better to work in RGB color mode (instead of CMYK) in
Illustrator?
Because RGB has more colors available than CMYK, and most
desktop printers are calibrated to work with RGB color
The Rule of Thirds means to divide your page into how many rows
and columns?
Three rows and three columns
How do you reflect an object across its vertical or horizontal axis?
Select the object, then right click > Transform > Reflect
What is the difference between a corner and a smooth anchor
point?
Corner points have direction handles that aren’t connected to each
other, or no handles at all. Smooth points have direction handles
that are connected, and so can’t be moved independently from each
other.
What are two places to change or reset the workspace?
he Window menu, and the Workspace Chooser (in the top right
corner of the application window)
How do you convert a text box between Point and Paragraph
type?
Double click on the small round ball extending from the right side of
the text box. Or go to Type > Convert to Point or Area.
While drawing a Rectangular Grid, how do you change the number
of columns and rows in the grid?
Use the Up/Down/Left/Right arrows while dragging with the
Rectangular Grid tool, or click once on the artboard to use the
Rectangular Grid menu box to enter the number of rows/columns
Why is it a good idea to convert text into vector outlines when
sending an Illustrator document to another person?
Because the other person may not have that font installed, so they
won’t be able to render the text correctly. Or they may not have
copyright permissions to use that font.
Which key can you hold to temporarily switch to the Hand tool?
Spacebar
What is the main benefit to placing a Linked file?
The linked layer maintains a connection to the original file on your
hard drive. So changes to the original file will be updated across any
Illustrator file that uses it.
How do you use the Live Paint Bucket tool?
First, select all the paths to include in the Live Paint Group and go to
Object > Live Paint > Make. Then use the Live Paint Bucket tool to
click inside each highlighted region and add a fill color. Fill colors
can only be selected from the Swatches panel.
Which option in the Save dialogue box makes your document
compatible with earlier versions of Illustrator?
After you choose a location and file name and click Save, the
Version dropdown box lets you choose to save for an older version
of Illustrator.
What does it mean that Illustrator is resolution independent? Why is
this a benefit over Photoshop?
Illustrator creates artwork that does not use pixels – all shapes are
made of vectors. So these shapes can be enlarged indefinitely,
without losing quality.
What is Overset text, and how do you know if you have it?
Overset text (sometimes called Overflow) is when your text is too
long or too big to be displayed entirely inside your text area. You
know if your text is overset because you will see a small red box with
a + plus sign inside of it in the bottom right corner of the text area.
