Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle 

      

  • Sailed down the Mississippi River exiting at the Gulf of Mexico
  • Claimed the land along the Mississippi River for France
  • Names it Louisiana after King Louis XIV
  • La Salle returned to France to get supplies and to return to the mouth of the Mississippi River (modern-day New Orleans) to establish a settlement
  • 1685 C.E. La Salle returns, but a hurricane blows his ships off course and he shipwrecks in modern-day Matagorda Bay
  • His ship, the La Belle, ran aground and was eventually partially buried.  It was excavated in 1995 after 300 years under water.  It is currently on exhibit in Austin in the Bullock Museum
  • La Salle thought he was in Louisiana and had his men build a fort, Fort St. Louis. He continued searching for the mouth of the Mississippi he had previously seen. (not knowing he was hundreds of miles away)
  • The fort was constantly being attacked by the Karankawa natives in the area as he searched for the Mississippi on foot.
  • People were dying, they were out of supplies, and could not find the Mississippi. The soldiers mutinied and killed La Salle somewhere in modern-day East Texas.
  • Some of the soldiers made their way back to Canada, the rest were killed by the Karankawas and the fort destroyed.
