Christopher Columbus did not respect the Native Americans. He wanted to use them as slaves. He kidnapped some of them to bring them back to show his King and Queen.

There are many paintings and images of explorers, like Columbus and Cartier setting up the flags of their countries when they landed. Why did they display symbols of their countries as they landed in the New World? 


They did it to claim the land for the country that sent them. More land meant more power.
