One of the effects was the Prophet pbuh would get dreams in which he would need to make ghusl after.
He knew he was inflicted through a dream where 2 angels sat beside him on his bed and had a conversation with one another, saying that this man was inflicted with a spell and stated that the location of the spell was in a well.
He broke the spell when he commanded Ali RA to go to the well and find the spell and untie the knot of his hair.
