Define what it means to have a "social license to research."

A social license to research [as with an industrial project’s “Social License to Operate”] is community acceptance of the research. Beyond being the moral thing to do, it ensures that the information provided by the community is sincere.

What was the Meriam Report and what did it do?

The Meriam Report of 1928 exposed the terrible state of schools for Native children and called for improvements. Many of the same concerns still exist.

200

What is the goal of CRP?

Fostering social and political consciousness for students from dominant and non-dominant social groups. In the Indigenous context, CRP works to combat the "erase and replace =" goal of colonial schooling.

200

What is "helicopter research?" How is it different from a social license to research?

“Helicopter research” = Researchers would come into a community for a short period of time and not provide feedback about the knowledge/ insights they received.

A social license to research is instead achieved by building trust through long-term relationships.

200

What were some constraints that the researchers ran into?

The university IRB refused to approve research with youth under 16, but they were the most interested group. Those over 16 were working (and thus had time constraints) or less interested.

What improvements did Meriam Report advocate for?

The Meriam Report advocated for curriculum including culture and tribal histories, locally-embedded schools, enhanced financial support, and more humane practices. 90 years later, similar calls for action still remain

- Investigating social inequities in the local community

- Involving parents in the design and content creation (ex: storytelling)

- Giving students the confidence to succeed academically

How did the LACE project researchers achieve a social license to research? Name two strategies.

- Coordinated with the First Nation

- Had a supportive contact in the community

- Had someone "translate" the complexity of the research to community stakeholders with non-academic language

- Took multiple trips

- Built non-research-based relationships with Native people

300
How did the researchers work to solve this challenge?

The researchers were able to gain insight from youth through lunchtime discussions.
