What kind of a helmet should you always ride in at Pony Club events?
An ASTM/SEI- certified hunt cap type or event type helmet.
What shoes should you wear when working around horses?
Shoes that are securely fastened, covers ankles, are entirely closed, and doesn't have open toes or bare feet.
How many times should you groom your horse?
At least every time you ride or have your pony inspected.
What should you always do with your stirrup bar before riding?
Check to make sure your stirrup bar is up.
What should your halter always have?
A breakaway feature.
What are safe riding boots for Pony Club events?
Riding boots with a heel wide enough not to slip through the stirrup, made from leather, synthetic, or rubber.
Don't wear sneakers, loafers, or deep tread hiking boots because they could get caught in the stirrup.
What color pants can you wear when you are dressing formal?
You may wear white, buff, canary, or tan breeches/ jodhpurs.
What are three major places on your horses face that should be wiped off before riding or having your pony inspected?
Eyes, lips, and nostrils.
How can you tell if your saddle tree is broken?
Pull sideways and push against pommel and cantle and any movement means the tree is broken.
How should your pony's saddle fit on his spine?
There should be a three finger channel above his spine so it doesn't take away motion and cause him to be sore.
What should you always wear with jodhpurs to prevent wrinkles?
Low boots or riding shoes, jodhpur knee straps or garters, and elastic pants clips.
What are the requirements for a show shirt (hint* formal attire) for all Pony Club shows/ tests?
White riding shirt with a collar and sleeves (in case the coat requirement is waived.)
What should you remove bot fly eggs with?
Styrofoam blocks and bot knives but be sure to lubricate styrofoam block with a dab of shampoo before using.
What are two dangerous conditions your tack could be in?
Your stitching is coming loose, leather is stretched out, cracked, or weakened, and shows evidence of dry rot.
How much space should be in between the front of the saddle and the withers?
Three fingers width.
What are two ways riding with gloves are helpful?
Riding gloves prevent blisters, help hold reins when they are wet, and with thick gloves, help keep your hands warm in the winter.
What are the requirements of a formal show coat?
Solid black, solid navy blue, or dark grey hunt coat with no pinstripes or patterns woven into fabric.
What are three important places to have clean on your horse before you ride?
- Under the saddle area
- Under the belly and between hind legs
- The back of pasterns and lower legs
- The head and around ears
- The elbows and between front legs
What are the four steps in cleaning tack?
Preparing, cleaning, conditioning, and protecting.
What is a girth cover?
A soft, washable fleece cover that fits over the girth to protect the pony's skin.
What should you do with your hair while riding?
Make sure it is neat and tidy! Long hair should be braided, done up in a bun, or put up under the helmet. Medium length hair may be put in a hair net.
Hair should never effect the fit of your helmet and should not be in your eyes or cover your number.
What arm should your medical arm band be on?
Your left arm and make sure it is completely filled out.
When should you braid your pony's mane?
At upper-level dressage shows.
What type of stirrup is no longer considered safe for Pony Club riders?
Peacock stirrup
How do you know a snaffle bit fits? (3 ways)
It must rest high in his mouth so he cannot get his tongue over it and it must make one or two gentle wrinkles at the corners of the pony's mouth, like a smile and there must be 1/8 to 1/4 inch space on either side of the mouth.
