NRC

Depending on the type of research done in the facility and species used, there may be additional standards applicable. For example, if radioactive materials are present in the facility, then the standards established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) must be met.

An area is considered a noise hazard if sound levels are regularly at or above how many decibels?

(85 decibels) Headset-type protectors and disposable foam ear plugs can be worn for hearing protection. Such devices should be worn in all areas averaging 85 decibels (dB) or more over an 8-hour work shift.

LAS

LAS "Laboratory animal science" refers to the scientific and technical information and techniques that apply to a career focused on the care of laboratory animals.

100

AAALAC

The ACP created the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International.

What causes Ergonomic injuries?

Ergonomic injuries are the most common type of injury in the animal facility. Ergonomic hazards can cause musculoskeletal injuries (sprains and strains). These injuries are generally caused by lifting, pulling, or pushing heavy objects, such as bags of feed or bedding material.

200

OSHA

In the US, the Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is the main federal agency that enforces rules or standard related to workplace safety.

Emergency Eye Wash and Shower Equipment recommends that the affected part of the body or eye after a potential exposure should be flushed for how many minutes?

(15 Minutes) Emergency stations use clean water under low pressure. They are generally located in areas with greater potential for chemical splashes, such as cage wash, necropsy areas and laboratory. Per the guidelines the affected area should be flushed for 15 minutes.

200

ACP

In 1950 a group of veterinarians led by Dr. Nathan Brewer formed the Animal Care Panel.

200

OLAW

The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare at NIH is responsible for the general administration and coordination of the PHS policy.

200

What is the definition of zoonotic diseases?

A zoonotic diseases is an animal disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Some examples are rabies, tuberculosis, Q fever and B virus which is potentially fatal to humans.

300

MSDS

Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) should be available for all chemicals used within the animal facility. These sheets provide information on toxicity and potential side effects, and also describe the recommended treatment if exposure occurs.

300

Cattle, sheep and goats are the primary host of which microorganism?

Cattle, sheep and goats are the primary host of Q fever. (Q-fever) is a disease causing flu-like symptoms that may develop into more serious health problems.

300

AALAS

In 1967 the ACP became the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, a national organization dedicated to humane care and treatment of laboratory animals.

300

PHS

The Public Health Service overseas many US federal agencies. The PHS Policy in Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals is federal mandate that applied to federally funded research projects.

300

What are the 3 key factors for persnoal protection when dealing with radioactive materials?

Shielding: Shielding material, such as lead aprons, are protective devices used to protect the body from radiation emitted by radioactive materials.

Time: Radioactive exposure is cumulative, so minimizing the time spent near radioactive materials is important.

Distance: The energy of radiation becomes weaker the further it is from radioactive material helps reduce exposure.

400

PAPR

When protection against airborne particles, allergens, or airborne pathogens is required, either an N95 type respirator or self-contained unit such as a PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirator must be worn.

400

When working with infectious agents, the guidelines published by which agency must be followed?

CDC (Center for Disease control and prevent) which published the (BMBL) Bio-safety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories.

400

PETA

PETA "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals". Two organizations that oppose animal research are people for ethical treatment of animals and SHAC USA "Stop Huntington Animal Cruelty USA.

400

EPA

The "Good Laboratory Practices", are a group of regulations that apply to animal and non-animal research and safety studies funded by the "Food and Drug Administration" and the "Environmental Protection Agency".

400

Which agency typically provide training programs on injury and illness, emergency action plan, ergonomics, chemical hygiene, hazardous waste handling, infectious agents, animal-related allergies, and respiratory protection?

The coordination of the occupational health and safety program is often delegated to the institution's Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S).

500

AED

Trauma bags or an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) may be located in the animal facility or in the surrounding area to tend to major medical needs.

500

A pregnant women should not work with cats for the duration of her pregancy because of the possible transmission of what parasite to the fetus? What is the name of the parasite?

Toxoplasma gondii

500

JAALAS

AALAS publishes two scientic journals, Comparative Medicine and the Journal of American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (JAALAS)

500

QA.

The Quality Assurance role is to independently monitor all phases of the research process to ensure compliance with the GLP's, SOP's, and the study protocol.

500

What does the acronym (BMBL) stand for?

Hint: The guideline are published by the CDC.

One of the comprehensive publications that provide guidelines to promote workers health and safety are: Bio-safety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories. (BMBL).
