What is Social Cognitive Theory?

This theory was developed by Albert Bandura and Walter Mischel. It was initially labelled cognitive social learning by Mischel. It explains that we don’t just learn from our own experiences but that we also learn by watching other people. It also emphasizes that our thoughts are important, because they influence how we understand and respond to what we see.

What is an example of observational learning

- A young boy might observe his father’s aggressive outbursts and hostile interchanges with people and when observed with his peers, the young boy’s style of interaction is highly aggressive, showing the same characteristics as his father’s behaviour.

- A girl might adopt the dominant and sarcastic style of her teacher and when observed interacting with her younger brother, she may say things like “You are so slow” or “How can you do this work so slowly?”

Why is it important to have positive role models?

Positive role models encourage desirable behaviours and social change. Help students model behaviours like problem solving and reading strategies. Techniques that rely on observation such as collaborative learning, guided practice, peer modelling

What were the ethical concerns involved in the Bobo Doll Experiment?

Child participants could not give informed consent and not debriefed in a way that they could understand, no explanation or reflection that aggressive behavior were for the study and discouraged outside the lab, could have given the impression that aggressive behavior was socially acceptable

Describe the Bobo Doll Experiment. (must have full details for full points)

Researchers physically and verbally abused a clown-faced inflatable toy in front of preschool age children which then lead them to mimic the behavior of adults by attacking the doll in the same fashion, children were exposed to such violence on videotape yielded similar results. He demonstrated that self efficacy or belief in one’s capabilities could impact choices, effort and feelings in 1977. His theory states that a person’s environment, cognition, and behaviour interact to justify how a person functions
