1. All trees are cleared away and topsoil is removed. 2. Shovels dig up the oil sand and take it to the crusher, which breaks the lumps and seperates the rocks. 3. The oil sand is mixed with hot water. The bitumen separates from the sand. 4. The bitumen is cleaned in several stages.Then it can be made into different products such as gasoline, heating oil and motor oil. 5. Clean sand replaces the oil sand, topsoil is added and trees are planted to try and restore the land.
