Model the prompting hierarchy we use when Sterling refuses to complete a task!

  • Initial verbal SD: present Sterling with instruction and wait 1 minute to initiate completion
  • Second verbal SD: represent instruction and wait another 1 minute for Sterling to initiate completion
  • Gesture to item necessary for completion of instruction: Use pointer finger to gesture to the item necessary for completing the instruction. Make NO eye contact with Sterling while gesturing. Wait for 30 seconds and if response is not initiated move onto the next prompt level.
  • Gesture to visual (if applicable) that can be used to complete instruction: Use your pointer finger to point to the visual located in close vicinity to the item necessary to complete instruction or routine. Make NO eye contact with Sterling while gesturing. Wait for 30 seconds and if response is not initiated move onto the next prompt level.
  • Model completion of task (if applicable): Begin completing the task yourself and narrating how you are completing it. If Sterling attempts to ask you questions, just let him know that you are busy and can talk later. Again, make no eye contact with Sterling while completing task. Complete entire instruction/task and if response is not initiated following your completion of task, move onto the next prompt level.
  • Partial Physical prompt with ASSENT: Guide Sterling by the shoulders or elbows through completion of the task. Utilize barbie hands in doing so to ensure Sterling's safety. Make no comments to Sterling while prompting and continue to make no eye contact. If Sterling indicates he requires more help through requesting or attempting to gain your attention, move onto the next prompt level.
  • Full physical prompt with ASSENT: Hand over hand guide Sterling through completion of task/instruction/routine. Make no comments to Sterling while prompting and continue to make no eye contact.
  • **IF at any point Sterling demonstrates assent withdrawal during the prompting of completion of the task, immediately withdraw all prompts and regain Sterling's assent. Once assent is regained, reimplement least to most prompting hierarchy from the beginning**.
