What is...Inscribed on the bottom of the seal is the year 1930. Back in 1930 the College of William and Mary decided to create a satellite campus here in Norfolk. Thus, we were originally called the Norfolk division of the College of William and Mary. Later, in 1962, we branched off and became Old Dominion College. Finally, in 1969, we gained University status and became Old Dominion University as we are known today. The origin of the name “Old Dominion” dates back to colonial America and incorporates our state history into our university name and seal. The nickname "Old Dominion" was first coined to the Virginia colony by King Charles II after Virginia's loyalty to the crown during the English Civil War. There were also a few other countries that were involved in the war and are represented in the center of the seal. These four shields represent the kingdoms of England, Scotland, Ireland and France.
