Explain the origins of the Dred Scott case and why it was important. 

Dred Scott was a slave in Missouri who went with his owner to Illinois (free state). After years of living in Illinois, both returned to Missouri and the owner ended up dying. Dred scott sued for his freedom. Supreme court ruled that slaves are not citizens, only white people could be Citizens.

Explain Bleeding Kansas

there was a scuffle in Lawrence after residents from Missouri illegally voted Kansas to have slaver. This scuffle resulted in one anti-slavery activist to be killed. So John Brown took a few of his men and killed 5 Pro slavery activists in what is called the Pottowatomie massacre. This led to a series of events that caused over 200 people being killed in Kansas.

Union took some islands off the coast of south Carolina, taking over 10,000 slaves. Once the navy left, slaves were left behind; so northern educators decided to teach the slaves about land, value of wage labor, etc and it was a huge success.
