In an era when artificial lighting was dirty and expensive, alcoves often made use of natural lighting by siting each alcove around an exterior window. Libraries using the alcove plan typically reserved different alcoves for different subjects, presaging the subject department plan that would become popular in large, urban libraries decades later (Oehlerts 25-26).
