An active 89-year-old woman lived independently and used a crutch. She had pre-existing conditions of high blood pressure and hypercholesterolemia, for which she took medication, among other perscriptions. She suffered a hip fracture after a fall, where she underwent an internal fixation using a dynamic hip screw. The procedure initially appeared uneventful. During the fourth week of a rehabilitation program, the patient's hip pain and thigh swelling significantly worsened, especially after increasing her range-of-motion exercises. She also developed a slight fever and inflammation. Her symptoms, including the severe femoral swelling, led the doctors to suspect a late-onset infection (sepsis), but they were incorrect and she died.
