These tracts conduct sensory impulses to the brain
Ascending spinal tracts
This is the center for spinal reflexes
The Spinal Cord
This lobe of the brain deals with vision
Occipital lobe
This neuron recieves information or stimuli
Sensory neuron
This part of the brain is the respiratory control center and regulates breathing rate and rhythm
Pons
These tracts conduct motor impulses from the brain via motor neurons reaching muscles and glands
Descending spinal tracts
A simple reflex arc deals with what?
Sensory and Motor
This lobe of the brain deals with hearing and smell
Temporal lobe
This neuron reacts to stimuli
Motor neuron
This part of the brain controls heart rate, the connection between the spinal cord and brain and cerebellum, involves all nerve tracts, axon crossing here
Medulla oblongata
This tract is ascending and deals with touch, pressure, and body movement
Fasciculus cutaneous spinal tract
Monosynaptic (stretch) reflex helps what?
helps maintain an upright posture
(knee-jerk reflex)
This lobe of the brain deals with sensations on the skin, such as temperature, pressure, and pain
Parietal lobe
There are 8 functions of the brain, name 5 of them.
- interprets sensations
- determines perception
- stores memory
- reasoning
- makes decisions
- coordinates muscular movements
- regulates visceral activities
- determines personality
This is the small section between the diencephalon and pons and deals with myelinated fibers and relays sensory and motor info
Midbrain
This tract is ascending and deals with pain and temperature.
Spinothalamic spinal tract
This reflex occurs when a person touches or steps on something painful, and prevents or limits tissue damage by removing limb from painful stimulus
Withdrawal reflex
This lobe of the brain deals with the conscious control of skeletal muscles, concentration, planning, and complex problem solving
Frontal lobe
What is the function of the thalamus?
-gateway for sensory impulses heading to cerebral cortex
-receives all sensory impulses ( except smell)
-channels impulses to appropriate part of cerebral cortex for interpretation
What is the function of the cerbellum?
Coordination of voluntary movements and balance
This tract is ascending and deals with coordination of lower limbs
Spinocerebellar spinal tract
During withdrawal reflex, flexors on the affected side contract, and extensors are inhibited (ipsilateral). At same time, extensors on the opposite side (contralateral) contract, and flexors are inhibited.
Also shifts body weight, so the person remains upright
Crossed extensor reflex
What are the 4 layers of brain protection?
1.bone
2.meninges
3.cerebrospinal fluid
4.blood brain barrier
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
-homeostasis
-integrates messages from higher centers and brainstem
-links the nervous system with the endocrine system
-heart rate, blood pressure, body temp, hunger, etc.
What is the function of the cerebrum?
-interpreting impulses
-initiating voluntary movements
-storing information as memory
-retrieving stored information
-reasoning
-seat of intelligence and personality
