In Canada today, people hire professional lawyers to speak for them in court, but in Athens, people had to argue their own cases. They needed to be well-spoken to convince the jury.

The leader was called the chairman, and they could only be chairman once in their lifetime for 24 hours.

A place for men to communicate and talk about the vote after the Assembly. This was when metics could influence their male citizen friends' votes.

The Bouleterion in the Agora. It was called the Council of 500, or the Boule.
Who would make decisions in the Court (there were two groups/types of people)? How were they chosen? What was their job?
- Magistrates made decisions in the court. They were male citizens and acted as judges. They were chosen by lottery for a one-year term. They decided if a case would be sent to trial or if the person guilty would be fined.
- Male citizens also made decisions (who made up the jury). They had to be over the age of 30 and there were between 501-1500 members. They listened to the defendant and the plaintiff, and voted on whether the defendant was innocent or guilty.

How were the Assembly, the Council of 500, and the Court connected?
The Council of 500 decided on the agenda for the Assembly, along with laws or decrees for them to approve. The Assembly voted on those decisions from the agenda, and approved laws to be passed. The Court would trial those who broke the laws that the Council of 500 and the Assembly created.

500 members. They chose (by lottery) 50 members from each of the 10 tribes in Athens.
