Qin Shihuangdi unified China. He cre-ated one currency, or type of money, to be used throughout the empire. He also ordered the construction of roads and a huge canal.

Landowning aristocrats were the wealthy upper class who owned land and often had political power. Farmers were respected because they produced food that supported society. Merchants traded goods and could become rich, but they had low social status because Confucian beliefs viewed profit-making as less honorable than producing goods or food.
