It became clear early in his reign that the young king was prepared to go against tradition. In his first year, he built a Temple dedicated to the Aten at the perimeter of the Temple of Amun at Karnak. Usually temples were not built so close together. He took the unconventional step of celebrating a Sedfestival in his third year (this festival was usually held in the 30th year of a pharaoh's reign).
