City-states are independent city. Ancient Greece's city-states all developed around the same time. They all have an agora, an acropolis and their own government system.
Explain the reasons why Democracy worked in Athens.
Democracy is a system where citizens have the right to vote. Athens was a city-state that followed several government systems. Democracy worked for them as it gave people rights such as rights to vote and the rights of speech.

An acropolis is built on a hilltop. Since it is the city's last line of defence, those placed there have an advantage of seeing the whole city. They can also see anyone trying to invade early on to act.

Solon was a reformer who because of, democracy was founded. He improved conditions for the poor by limiting the power of aristocracy and allowing free citizen to pass laws. This allowed people to have more rights and have a say in decisions that affect their city-state.

Monarchy is a government system that is rules by one person, usually a king. A king made and passed laws and punished those who broke them. He also had people pay protection taxes.
Compare & contrast the role of helots in Sparta & Athens.
In both Athens and Sparta, helots belonged to the same class. Helots were seen as the lowest class and didn't have any privileges. Their roles in each city-state was different. In Sparta, they were responsible for farming the land while in Athens, they were owned by their master until death.

Sparta was known for its powerful military. It developed such a strong military system was that they feared the helots would outnumber them therefore; they made the army the center of everything.

Both a spartan and Alexander the Great had a great and ambitious army. Sparta's military kept growing its army; training them to become to most powerful. Alexander used great military tactics and loyal soldiers. Both resulted to great conquests. The difference between them are their expansion. Sparta would fight both internally and didn't make an empire however; Alexander fought to expand his empire stretching it from Persia to India.
