How did physical geography shape Greek culture?

The rugged Greek terrain made it very hard to travel by foot, so the Greeks settled into various independent cities or city-states.  

The Greek climate was very mild/wet during the winter and hot during the summer making the area suitable for long rooted crops instead of short rooted crops. 

Being almost completely surrounded by water on the Greek Peninsula, the Greeks had to be skillful sailors in order to travel, trade, and fish the Mediterranean.
