Athenians were more indulges in luxuries. They were materialistic and valued education highly.

Spartans were basic people, athenians called them barbaric. They did not care for martialism and luxuries and valued war and fighting.

What is the difference between the Ancient Athenian way of democracy and our Australian government system today? 

Ancient Athenian democracy was a Direct Democracy. Each individual citizen had his say in the matter. They had very strict citizenship criteria. 

Our Australian democracy is a Representative Democracy. We elect a representative for local, state, and federal electorates to represent us as citizens in the house of representatives (parliament). Everyone can be a citizen if they complete the necessary process.

What was the difference in the slaves lives?

Sparta was far more cruel. Helots were forced to give part of what they grew or worked on back to the state as tax. They were owned by the state and treated very poorly. Slaves out numbered citizens 20 to 1!

Athenian serfs worked for their master only. Were quite often received as being a part of the family and were allowed to live by themselves. Athenian slaves had a better chance of being freed their their helot counter parts.
