The Persian king Darius sent 600 ships and 20,000 soldiers to Marathon to fight the Athenians, only 10,000 soldiers. When the Athenians refused to fight, the Persians sent out their cavalry onto the plain of Marathon, but the Athenians defeated the foot soldiers caught unawares and defeated the Persians. The runner who passed the news on ran a "marathon", yelled "Victory" according to legend, and fell over dead.
