There were wars between lords and Emperors. In these wars, lots of land that peasants farmed on was destroyed. This caused chaos with many peasants becoming thieves and bandits. The emperors did nothing and just focused on their courtly lives, so someone else was needed to take charge

Both men and women learned to fight, self-discipline was very important, honor was important, so you always follow your lord's order, if honor is lost, you are expected to commit suicide
