What is a bird?   Because they possess key avian characteristics: they have feathers, lay hard-shelled eggs, are warm-blooded, and have specialized beaks. Despite being flightless, their anatomy and evolutionary history confirm they are specialized seabirds, with wings that evolved into powerful flippers for swimming instead of flying.
