What is Computer Animation?

Humans have been attempting to "animate" things for thousands of years. Early humans used to draw pictograms on these types of surfaces, and would draw multiple sets of legs on animals to indicate movement.

Animators typically shoot "on-twos" when they are stop-motion animating. Meaning that it takes this many photos to create just one second of film.

The name of the central character of the show, he's an airbender trying to learn the ways of the Avatar.

The OLDEST form of animation, this form requires A LOT of patience, picture-taking, and attention to detail. Examples of this type of animation are Isle of Dogs, The Box Trolls and Coraline.

A Zoetrope was one of the earliest forms of moving pictures. It was invented in China in around 180 CE and involved the viewer looking through little slits as it spun around on THIS 3D-object.

The Lego Movie, while NOT stop-motion animated, was in part inspired by various forms of these, which were animated short films that Lego enthusiasts created over the years. There's even a nod to them in the movie in one scene.

Every frame in this type of animation is hand-drawn, from the sets to the characters' movements. Many Disney films uitilize this form of animation, and it is occasionally used in modern movies, typically in art films or independent movies.

Lotte Reineger, whom we learned about in Cycle 1, was a female animator who was a master of this form of animation, which appeared like shadow-puppetry on screen. Her film, "The Adventures of Prince Achmed" used a revolutionary filming technique, that was later stolen by Walt Disney.

This form of stop-motion animation includes such classics as Gumby, The Adventures of Wallace and Gromit, and Chicken Run.

She is thought to be one of the last water benders. One of the main characters of the show, she cares deeply about her friends and is always looking out for them. 

Who is Katara?

This type of animation is used in many live-action movies. Sometimes also referred to as computer graphics imagery or CGI, it is commonly used to create realistic-looking scenes with the help of computer animation. 

What is motion graphics?

This was Walt Disney's first full-length film. We watched a clip describing how the animators individually painted each of the films 120,000 frames. It took the studio more than 4 years to make this movie.

Stop-motion animators nowadays utilize this device to custom design the faces for various characters, replacing faces, eyes, or other parts to create different expressions on their stop-motion characters

The self-proclaimed "world's greatest earthbender" this character can "see" through her feet. She's stubborn and tough as the ground that she moves around so well.

A lot of modern cartoon shows, like Regular Show, My Little Pony, and many children's shows, utilize this two-word form of animation. Sometimes referred to as "traditional computer generated animation" it's like animating virtual puppets onscreen.

The Flintstones was one of the most popular animated Cartoons of the 1950s. It was so successful that THIS counterpart show was created, set in a silly version of the future.

This form of stop-motion involves animating people, typically by having them strike the same pose and taking multiple photos to indicate movement. The phrase is very similar to when a screen gets split up into tiny, tiny boxes.
