The author first creates suspense when he says "some premonition told him to hide away in his room for as long as possible." (lines 174-175)  This signals to the reader that something bad is going to happen. He also creates suspense by describing the housekeeper from behind. he says that at first " she seemed normal" ( lines 176), which suggests to the reader that things are really not normal. When she is still shaking after she has stopped cranking the mixer, we know that something bad has happened.

Gilbert hopes to leap into the infinite sideways" and find his father alive. He thinks this is possible because all around him are other handcars with other Gilbert's and Limburghers. The Children are all different some older, some are younger, one Gilbert is a girl. This convinces him that there might also be another ship out there on which his father survived the storm.

However, the watch, spyglass, and sailor suit also have sentimental value. they are symbols of his lost father (sailor suit and watch) and grandfather (spyglass). so, his motivation are not purely practical.)
