Explain the mode of action of a benzodiazepine

Benzodiazepines increase the effect of GABA (an agonist) and GABA receptors in the CNS and spinal cord. GABA will attach to a chloride ion channel and allow rapid flow of negative ions into the cell; this makes it more difficult for the threshold to be released and the action potential to occur. The inhibition of action potentials causes many of the benzodiazepine's side effects.
