it is important to determine the size and scope of a problem because it will help you decide if you can solve it by yourself or if you will need help and how you will react and respond to the problem.

Your dad noticed you were squinting when you were watching TV. He made you an appointment with the eye doctor, and sure enough, the eye doctor said that you need glasses. Your family thinks you look great in your new glasses, and you can see much better, but you are worried that your friends will tease you when they see you with glasses. You don’t want to wear your glasses at school.

What decision would you make and why?

Student answers may vary based on their personal decision.  The basis of their answer should be to wear the glasses or not, with their own justification.

Janiyah is riding her bike to the store. She realizes that her tire is low but she doesn't think anything of it because she is only going down the street and does not plan on being gone long. She runs into the store and grabs all the things she needs. As Janiyah comes out the store she realizes her tire is now flat and she will need to find a way to fix it and get home. She immediately begins to cry because she is so frustrated.

This is an example of an emotional reaction because Janiyah is crying.

This is an example of an unintended consequence because Janiyah did not expect for her tire to go flat.

Bian and Thuy are in charge of the school friendship dance.  They have to figure out the best way to ensure that all students have fun.  Bian gathers all of the information about friendship dances from past years, and Thuy creates surveys to ask student opinions for this year.  After gathering all of the data, Thuy and Bian have a plan for the food, DJ, photographer, theme, and ticket prices.

This is an example of decision making.  No problem exists, and the girls are selecting from existing alternatives.

Someone from your school posted on social media that school will be canceled due to bad weather. Some students are excited, but others are unsure. Explain how you would determine the degree of reliability for this information being shared on social media and decide whether to trust it.

Answers may vary. I would check if the post comes from an official school account or a reliable source like the school website. If it's from a classmate or a random person, I would be skeptical and wait for an official announcement from the school.

Kaliyah and Kayden are watching the news. There is a tornado coming to the St. Louis, Missouri area. CNN News reporters are encouraging citizens to evacuate the area as soon as possible. The news switches to reporters in Illinois, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

What is the difference between convergent thinking and divergent thinking? 

Divergent thinking is when you brainstorm and come up with a bunch of ideas. (open ended response question)

Convergent thinking is when there is only one right answer (multiple choice question)
