Photosynthesis/ Cellular Respiration
Mr. Tenpas
100

What is the main function of enzymes?

To decrease the activation energy needed for a reaction to occur and speed up the reaction.

100

What is the formula for photosynthesis? Label reactants and products.

6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2

Reactants then products

100

What is the formula for cellular respiration?

C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O

100

What are redox reactions/explain reduction and oxidation.

OIL RIG

100

Mr. Tenpas is a Girl Dad. How many daughters does he have? (Bonus points if you can name them!)

4 (Kennedy, Harper, Haisley, Colleen (Leena)

200

What are the two types of metabolic pathways?

Describe them.

Catabolic - breaking large molecules into smaller molecules

Anabolic - building large molecules from small molecules

200

What color of light do most plants use for the light reactions?

ALL colors except green. (Red and Blue/Purple work best)

200

When I say that NADH and FADH2 are energy-carrying molecules, what does that mean that they have in them? (Hint: don't put energy)

Electrons!

200

In the light reactions, light energy is converted into what? Be specific

NADPH and ATP

200

Mr. Tenpas' parents both had careers related to science. Name one of them.

Dad: Dairy Farmer

Mom: Nurse (Cardiac Rehab)

300

Describe the difference between the active site vs the allosteric site on an enzyme.

The active site is where the substrate would bind to the enzyme.

The allosteric site is where allosteric inhibitors and activators can bind to change the shape of the active site.

300

Explain excited states vs ground states for electrons in the LD reaction.

Excited electrons have been hit with a photon which makes them bounce around and go down the ETC in the thylakoid membrane. The ground state is when an electron has not had light energy and is more calm.

300

What is the final electron acceptor? And what does it create when it accepts electrons and hydrogens?

Oxygen

It creates H2O from gaining 2 electrons and 2 hydrogens

300

What are the 2 types of anaerobic respiration?

Lactic acid and alcohol fermentation

300

Mr. Tenpas' first teaching job, that he got paid for, was a long term sub where he taught what subject?

Math/Algebra 1 - God help those students!

400

Describe the difference between exergonic and endergonic reactions.

Exergonic reactions release energy and yield simple products.

Endergonic reactions absorb energy and yield complex molecules.

400

Explain the connection between the light reactions and the Calvin Cycle.

The light reactions create NADPH and ATP that is use in the reduction phase of the Calvin Cycle to make G3P

400

Write how much ATP is made during each step of Cellular Respiration: glycolysis, krebs cycle, and ETC.

2, 2, 26-34

400

What is the process by which Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis use to make ATP?

An ETC is used to make an H+ gradient which then by chemiosmosis flows down its concentration gradient through ATP synthase to make ATP

400

Mr. Tenpas won a state championship his senior year in baseball. What position did he play in that game?

DH

500

What does it mean for the enzyme to have an induced fit?

The enzyme purposefully changes the shape of its active site to better bind to the substrate.

500

How does the Calvin Cycle work? Describe the 3 phases

Carbon Fixation, Reduction, Regeneration

500

How does the ATP synthase work?

The H+ ions that are moving because of the electrical current in the inner membrane are moving them into the ATP synthase which acts like a rotor to pump them across the membrane. The energy from them being pumped across the membrane helps ADP and Pi get bonded together.

500

What is split apart at PSII, and what happens to those molecules?

Water is split. Oxygen is released through the stomata, electrons go through the ETC in the thylakoid membrane, and the H+ ions stay in the thylakoid lumen and go to the ATP Synthase to eventually make ATP.

500

Mr. Tenpas' sister used to teach at BDHS. What subject did she teach?

Spanish
