Why is using a tube important with lifeguarding?

What is providing a protective barrier between patron and LG. 

If a person is in distress having the tube between patron and guard allows for a device to keep both parties safe. There's many times when people continue to freak out and pull you down with them, if the tube is there it should allow for enough of a leverage to be able to properly push away from patron.

Scenerio:

You see a kid (6 year old) who appears to be stumbling while walking down pathway behind kiddie to leisure pool. The kid is obviously cooled down but still pale and sweaty. The patron also has a white sticker on his arm. The patron has almost a drunk appearance to him, how do you proceed?

What is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)

Treatment- Ask for consent, SAMPLE, attempt to raise sugar as soon as possible, if patron can swallow then sugary drinks and snacks may work. If person cannot swallow/doesn't get better within 10-15 minutes activate EMS.

If you are unable to see your entire zone how should we resolve the issue?

What is moving. 

If moving and roaming (at even stands with chairs) and the problem is not resolved such as new obstacles (too many tubes in lazy), glares, etc alert a head guard. Zone verifications are preformed to ensure each zone can be adequately guarded, without these or lack of rechecking throughout different times of day can show unexpected challenges that will arise at time of opening.

What is the difference between heat stroke/exhaustion? What would be different between their treatments?

Heatstroke- decreased mental status, body temp of 104+, no sweat, pale, seizures, hallucinations. Treatment=aggressively cool, pour water on them, apply ice packs, recover position, DO NOT let them eat or drink.

Heat Exhaustion-weakness, dizzy, thirst, headache, N/V, feels faint. Treatment=move to cooler place, cool, give a cool sports drink too or water, limit physical activity, lay flat, call Ems if not improved within minutes,

Patron goes down toilet bowl with a big boom heard as he lands in the bowl. Pt comes up confused and stumbles out. Pt is holding his neck and is having trouble seeing straight. How do you proceed?


What is a concussion. 

Ask for consent, activate EAP/EMS, attempt to understand their mental status and see how much they can recall, do not let them return to normal activity/something that can further injury.

What is a triaging system? When is it used?

What is

Triage/triaging is a systematic approach that separates groups of patrons who are ambulatory, delayed, immediate, and dead. Used in mass causality incidents where there are many injured. Delayed and immediate relies on their status and who can wait a second vs who needs me now. Delayed=bruising/sprains, immediate=bleeding everywhere.

Scenerio:

A patron had gone down blue green too soon and collided with another patron in slide. One patron was fine but the second one had came out with blood coming out of his mouth. You advise the patron to calm down and while he's screaming in your face you notice he is missing a tooth that was there prior. How do you proceed?

What is a missing tooth. 

Treatment: activate EAP and clear pool with rapid (bodily fluids!!!), encourage patron out of pool, ask for consent, PPE, have patron gently bite down on gauze to help control the bleeding, encourage leaning forward so blood does not go down throat, ice packs. With the tooth specifically only hold the tooth by the crown (don't touch root!) an put tooth in one of the following liquids: bee propolis, egg whites, coconut water, ricetral, whole milk if none is available have person spit into cup and put in there.

What is Scan, Target, Assess, Alert, Rescue. Helps determine the difference between kids playing or "fake drowning" and patrons who need help. Assess should be less then 10 seconds.

If a person was choking but suddenly went limp what do I do next?

What is 30 compressions, check the airway, (if object) PPE and pinky sweep, 2 breaths. 

Breaths don't go in, retilt reseal, if still nothing redo 30 compressions and repeat process.
