Choices Speakers Make
The style of language used; generally tailored to be appropriate to the audience and situation
What is Diction?
The combination of reasons, evidence, etc that an author uses to convince an audience of their position.
What is argument?
"We run, and we run, and we run, like rats on a wheel."
What is repetition?
Who the author is directing his or her message towards
What is the audience?
To draw special attention to a fact, idea, or situation.
What is underscore?
Explaining something complex by comparing it to something more simple.
What is analogy?
The argument(s) against the author's position.
What is counterargument?
"There they stood together, the beggars and the lords, the princesses and the washerwoman, all crowding into the square.
What is juxtaposition?
The extra-textual environment in which the text is being delivered.

To show or illustrate by an example

Placing two very different things together for effect

Today, 37 cents out of every dollar earned in this country is the tax collector's share, and yet our government continues to spend 17 million dollars a day more than the government takes in. We haven't balanced our budget 28 out of the last 34 years. We've raised our debt limit three times in the last twelve months, and now our national debt is one and a half times bigger than all the combined debts of all the nations of the world.
What is logos?
The author's persuasive intention
What is purpose?
situating ideas, arguments, or practices in a larger context (e.g., a historical context, a critical context, a cultural context) in order to call their audience's attention to that context

The way sentences are grammatically constructed

Not too long ago, two friends of mine were talking to a Cuban refugee, a businessman who had escaped from Castro, and in the midst of his story one of my friends turned to the other and said, "We don't know how lucky we are." And the Cuban stopped and said, "How lucky you are? I had someplace to escape to." And in that sentence he told us the entire story.
What is anecdote?
The persona adopted by the author to deliver his or her message; may or may not actually be the same person as the author
Who is the speaker?
A word or expression that can be understood in two or more possible ways
What is ambiguous?
Re-using a word or phrase repeatedly for effect or emphasis.
What is repetition?
To modify, limit, or restrict your argument by presenting exceptions
What is qualify?
As for the peace that we would preserve, I wonder who among us would like to approach the wife or mother whose husband or son has died in South Vietnam and ask them if they think this is a peace that should be maintained indefinitely.
