The mass of air surrounding a planet

What is atmosphere?

100

A measure of the energy of random motion in a substance's molecules

What is temperature?

100

You would study this region of the atmosphere to study the weather.

What is the troposhere?

This is the region where the majority of weather phenomena are

100

Daily Double:  Draw the regions and layers of the atmosphere.

(8 possible points - 200 each point)

Give 200 points per each correctly labeled layer and region from p. 484 Infographic 13.1

100

This is the size and style font to use in your research paper.

What is 12-point Times New Roman?

200

The force (weight) applied over a unit of area

What is pressure?

200

The transfer of energy by waves

What is radiation?
200

I would study this region of the atmosphere if I wanted to study the ozone layer.

What is the stratosphere?

200

The Homosphere region is made mostly of this gas.

What is nitrogen?

200

This is the spacing of my typed research paper.

What is double-spaced?

300

The pressure exerted by the atmosphere on all objects within it.

What is atmospheric pressure?

300

The transfer of heat by by contact

What is conduction?

300

You would study this region of the atmosphere if you wanted to study the aurora borealis.

What is the ionosphere?

300

A sample of air taken was mostly oxygen in this region of atmosphere.

What is the heterosphere?

300

This is when quotations should be placed in a separate paragraph.

What is a quotation that is longer than 4 lines of text?

400

The process by which certain gases trap heat that radiates from Earth.

Bonus:  list 3 gases for extra 100 points

What is the Greenhouse effect?

Bonus:  water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane

400

The transfer of heat by currents

What is convection?

400

These 3 layers of the atmosphere are in the homosphere.

What are the troposphere, stratosphere and mesosphere?

400

This is the layer of the homosphere in which temperature increases with increasing altitude.

What is the stratosphere?

(because of the ozone layer)

400

Every page, including the first page and Works Cited page, should have this in the header.

What is your last name and the page number, with one space and no punctuation in between?

500

Energy that is transferred as a consequence of temperature differences

What is heat?

500

T or F:  Water freezes because of heat.

What is true?

Heat is energy that is being transferred.  To freeze water, energy must be transferred from the water to the surroundings.  So, water freezes because of heat!

500

These two layers of the atmosphere are in the heterosphere.

What are the thermosphere and exosphere?

500

Traveling up through the troposphere, if speed could be measured, the molecules in the air would decrease, increase or stay the same as altitude increased.

What is they decrease?

(Temperature measures the average energy of molecules, which is directly related to their speed.  Since temperature decreases with increasing altitude in the troposphere, the average energy of the molecules in the troposphere decreases, which means speed decreases as well. )

Name one important aspect to consider when editing your research paper.

Only one answer required and they may vary:

Does it answer the research question?  Does is address the issue in an unbiased way? Does it use specific facts for support?  Is it organized in a way that makes sense (arrangement)? Do you have smooth transitions between paragraphs? Has someone else read it? Check for grammar and spelling errors.
