A collection of languages that originate from a common ancestral language that dates back long before recorded history
Ex. Indo-European, Sino-Tibetan, Afro-Asiatic
What is language families?
Boundaries of where regional words are used
Ex. vernacular region, vague, general boundary
What is isogloss?
An inhibition or ban resulting from social custom or emotional aversion
Ex. Muslims don't eat pork, Hindus don't eat beef, both because of environmental (animals not fit for the environment and would compete for resources) and social factors (set apart themselves, religious reasons, etc)

The adoption of the behavior patterns of the surrounding culture (2-3 generations)
Ex. An immigrant family's children start to speak slang terms, eat more foods that are found in their new country instead of their home country foods.

Language spoken by the Roman army while they conquered Europe; spread of Romance branch
Ex. different times, different soldiers, different ways of speaking
