What caused the New York City Draft Riots in 1863?

There was a law saying that if you were called to fight for the North, you could "duck out" on your responsibilities by paying $300. Working class men saw this as a fundamental injustice because it was only able to be paid by the rich. To protest, a gathering of men marched in New York City. This turned violent, and at lead 120 people were killed.
