At the beginning of the war, the north only got soldiers from them volunteering and so many people volunteered that they had to turn them down.

advantage: british would help the south by building confederate ships and breaking the naval blockade so they could get cotton from the south

habeaus corpus 

President Lincoln suspended habeas corpus, which was a petition that required police to present prisoners before the court to examine the legality of their arrest. Lincoln suspended it so that pro-Confederacy people might be arrested.

mass migration of people to california because they wanted to find gold. Many ended up with nothing!

industry/economy

Advantage: the North was more industrialized and not as rural as the South, they had factories and railroads that ultimately helped them win.

Slave states still in the Union

Disadvantage: the South lost manpower and support. They could've also used the bordering slave states for different strategic positions and more support, as well as more access to rivers, canals, and railroads, but because those states were in the Union, it wasn't possible.

The Emancipation Proclamation, issued by Abraham Lincoln, declared that slaves who were still in Confederate states could be free.

A law signed in 1842 that would grant 160 acres of almost free land to anyone who settled on the land and improved the land. This heavily encouraged migration and the westward expansion
