This court case looked at Marbury being given a commission by former Pres. John Adams, however the new Secretary of State (James Madison refused to deliver it. Marbury then sued, where the court decided this was unconstitutional for Jefferson's staff to do. Therefore, the precedent of the court being the ultimate decision maker over debates of the constitution was put into place.
