It was one of the key causes of the Civil War…. Formed in 1854 by a coalition of the Free soil, Know Nothing, Renegade Whig parties. It was a liberal, anti-slavery party.

A Missouri slave sued for his freedom after living in a northern portion of the United States for four years. He claimed that this made him and free man. The federal court decided that he wasn't allowed to sue because he was federal property, not a citizen…. After the U.S. signed the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, they realized they had left out portions of the southwest stagecoach routes to California. James Gadson the U.S. Minister to Mexico was called to draw up a treaty that would purchase these territories from Mexico in order to build a southern continental railroad. This territory makes up Parts of Arizona and New Mexico.

The South was governed by a select few rich people who were the head of southern society. They determined the political, economic, and social life of their region. The wealthiest had homes in towns as well as summer homes, they traveled widely, and children got good education. These people were defined as the cotton magnates, the sugar, rice, and tobacco, the whites who owned at least 40 or 50 slaves and 800 or more acres.... She wrote the abolitionist book, Uncle Tom's Cabin. It was the Book that helped to crystallize the rift between the North and South. It has been called the greatest American propaganda novel ever written, and helped to bring about the Civil War.

In 1859 John Brown, a militant abolitionist, raided the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry. He planned to end slavery by massacring slave owners and freeing their slaves. His plan failed and he was executed.
