The Softest Threads

Just because the sleeves are tight,

The neck is torn, and the dirt won't go,

Doesn't mean that I won't fight.

This is my favorite shirt, you know.

The spot you most complain about

Happened during the greatest pass.

Across the field, I dashed way out;

I caught the ball and a streak of grass!

Soaked by the rain, dried in the sun,

Battered by wind from the sky,

These are the world's softest threads.

I simply will not say goodbye.

In the late 1880s, John Muir was worried about the wilderness around Yosemite Valley in California. The natural beauty of Yosemite was being threatened by grazing livestock, which had overrun the area. In the late summer months of 1890, Muir wrote articles urging people to protect Yosemite. His hard work paid off in October of that year, when Congress created Yosemite National Park. It was the country's third national park. Yellowstone had become the first, in 1872.

Tiny ants live and work together in large groups called colonies. A single ant colony may have millions of ants living together in a nest with many tunnels and rooms. The queen ant is the head of the colony, but each ant in the colony has a job to do. The queen ant produces all of the eggs, while young female worker ants care for the eggs. Worker ants also dig tunnels and keep the nest clean. When they get older, some worker ants become soldier ants. Some soldier ants keep the nest safe and attack enemies. Others go out to seek food for the ants in the colony. When they find food, they bring it back to the nest. Each type of ant is important to the colony. Together, they can keep a colony going for hundreds of years.

A Canal through Panama

The Panama Canal is a human-made waterway between North and South America. Before the canal was built, ships had to travel around South America to reach the Pacific Ocean from the Atlantic Ocean. The new waterway through the country of Panama created an easier route for ships. However, building the Panama Canal turned out to be harder than anyone expected.

In the late 1800s, France tried to build a canal through Panama. The country had thick jungles, though. This caused workers to suffer a lot. There were poisonous snakes, insects, and spiders in the jungle. Heavy jungle rains also caused many accidents for the workers. Worst of all, mosquito bites caused yellow fever and other illnesses. But nobody knew the mosquitoes were to blame. So, the workers kept getting sick. Because of these hazards, France stopped working on the canal. It wasn't safe for the workers.

In 1902, the United States decided to try to build the Panama Canal. John Stevens was put in charge of the project. Stevens improved the safety of the workers, so there were fewer accidents. He also improved workers' housing. The new housing helped protect workers from the dangerous mosquitoes. Dr. William Gorgas was also brought to Panama to help with mosquitoes. Gorgas's team used special sprays to kill the mosquitoes. The team also put mosquito netting around the workers' houses. After two years, there were almost no cases of mosquito-caused illnesses at the canal site.

Because of the efforts of Stevens and Gorgas, the Panama Canal finally opened in 1914. Since then, hundreds of thousands of ships have passed through the canal. It has helped move people and goods quickly between countries. Even so, the Panama Canal is still remembered as one of the hardest projects in history.

b. It is about how many ships pass through the Panama Canal each year.

c. It is about how difficult it was to build the Panama Canal.
