How long will I have to serve on active duty to be eligible for the full entitlement for the Post 9/11 GI Bill?

You’re eligible for 100% of the full benefit if you meet at least 1 of these requirements:

  • You served on active duty for a total of at least 1,095 days (at least 36 months), or
  • You served on active duty and received a Purple Heart on or after September 11, 2001, or
  • You served on active duty for at least 30 continuous days (without a break), and we discharged you because of a service-connected disability

Are there enlistment bonuses?

Currently, enlistment bonuses are up to $40,000.

How old must I be to enlist into the Army?

Minimum of 17 years old with parental consent, up to 35 years old. Waivers may be processed for older than 35 years old.

What housing is available to me as a soldier?

If you are a Sergeant or below, and have no dependents, you will be assigned a barracks room. 

If you are a Staff Sergeant or above, or have dependents, you will have the option to live on military housing, or may live off-post in housing that is paid for with your BAH.

Can I switch my job in the military?

Yes, you can reclassify to a different job, provided you meet the requirements and the job is available. You may have to reenlist in order to meet the requirements for reclassification.
