What are study skills?

Learned strategies and routines that help students plan, organize, understand, remember, and communicate information.

100

What is one effective way to test yourself while studying, and how does it improve memory?

e.g. Using flashcards or covering notes and recalling out loud; it strengthens memory by practicing recall, which helps information stick long-term.

100

Compare organizational skills and time management. How are they similar and different?

Both help students stay on track and succeed. Organizational skills focus on managing materials and tasks, while time management focuses on when and how long to work on those tasks.

100

A student has 4 tests in one week but waits until the night before each one to study. What study skill are they misusing, and what should they do instead?

Poor time management; they should space out studying over several days using a schedule.

200

In the “brain as a computer” analogy, what do study skills represent?

Software/apps that help the brain process and use information effectively.

200

A student studies using the 1-3-5-7 method and takes breaks between sessions. Which part of studying does this represent (what, how, or when)? Why would this help them?

When to study; it focuses on spacing out study sessions over time, which improves memory and retention by increasing recall.

200

Why is highlighting or underlining or copying everything in a text NOT an effective note-taking strategy?

Because it doesn’t help identify main ideas; it makes everything seem equally important and harder to study. (If everything is important, nothing is important.)

200

You study for 2 hours straight with your phone nearby. You feel distracted and exhausted, and it's hard to focus. What study strategies could improve this? (think: memory and concentration skills)

Study in short sessions with breaks, e.g. Pomodoro or other timer system.
Remove distractions like the phone by putting them in another room, turning them off, or putting them on DND or airplane mode.

300

What is the main goal of organizational skills?

To manage materials, time, deadlines, and information effectively.

300

A student breaks a big project into smaller tasks with deadlines. What skill are they using? How does it help them?

Time management skills.

Less stress/overwhelm, higher quality work, time to ask for help or catch your mistakes, better focus, better motivation, more repetition and therefore better understanding and long-term memory.

300

Why is “testing yourself” more powerful for study than just rereading notes?

It strengthens memory by forcing recall. Every time you have to remember or use a piece of information, you further 'blaze' the path to that info your mind, making it quicker, easier, and faster to find next time. This also helps move information into long-term memory.

300

A student re-reads their notes and textbook many times, but cannot remember anything during the test. What study technique should they start using?

Self-testing (flashcards, practice quizzes, teaching others).

400

What is the main goal of time management skills?

To plan, prioritize, and use time wisely.

400

Give one specific example of a note-taking strategy and explain how it improves learning.

e.g. Writing summaries in your own words; it helps you understand and remember key ideas better, encourages you to put ideas into your own words instead of just memorizing.

e.g. Cornell notes; it helps you stay focused and actively involved while learning, keep information organized, review faster, understand the material better, and remember it longer. It also encourages you to put ideas into your own words instead of just memorizing.

400

Explain why cramming the night before a test is less effective than spaced studying.

Cramming doesn’t give the brain enough time, repetition, or sleep to store information. Your brain moves information from short-term to long-term memory while you are sleeping, so you need multiple study sessions across multiple days (multiple 'sleeps') before each test.

Personal application: What is ONE study skill from these specific lessons you could use THIS week? How would you use it?
