Two major events took place in May and is the reason it was chosen as the month to celebrate Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month.

What is the first Japanese immigrant to arrive in the United States on May 7, 1843. Two decades later, on May 10, 1869, the final Golden Spike was driven into the last railroad tie, to complete the Transcontinental Railroad; where it is well known that it was Chinese immigrants were responsible for the more dangerous labor tasks. In 1979, Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation recognizing the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to American culture and history. 1992, George W. Bush set aside this to be celebrated for the month of May. In 2009, President Obama changed the celebration's name to be more inclusive and changed the name to Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM). It never took off and is still recognized as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI Heritage Month.)
