Why is eye contact important in ASL?

ASL is a visual language. If one does not maintain eye contact when communicating in ASL, one cannot truly "listen." Additionally, breaking eye contact is considered rude. If a hearing person is having a conversation with a deaf person and must step away for a moment, it is important for the hearing person to inform to the person who is deaf beforehand.
