What is a name sign & what are the two types?

Name signs are special signs used to uniquely identify a person, just like a name. Can only be given by someone in the Deaf Community!

Name signs can be 1) descriptive – a particular physical or personality trait is incorporated within the sign or 2) arbitrary – the sign is typically body-anchored, but not associated with any specific traits

Various facial expressions, head tilting, shoulder raising, mouthing, and similar signals that we add to our hand signs to create meaning!

What is sweeping in ASL?

A sweeping motion may be used to indicate plurality. A horizontal sweep with the index finger may be used for signs like WE, YOU-ALL, THEY, THESE, THOSE. A vertical sweep would be used if words are listed on a board, for example.
