data (numbers or observations) that support your claim
What is evidence?
A statement you are making or declaring.
What is claim?
Colleen was building a wooden race car. She could choose between two types of wheels for the car. Each of these wheels was ten inches in diameter, but one type was heavier than the other. Colleen was curious if the weight of the wheels would affect how fast her race car could go down the race hill.
Colleen put the lighter set of wheels on the car and rolled down the hill three times. She measured how long it took her to get to the bottom each time. Then, she put the heavier set of wheels on the car and rolled down the hill three more times. Once again, she measured how long it took to reach the bottom of the hill each time.
What is the independent variable?
What is the weight of the wheels?
True or False: Your data table does not need a title
What is false?
Name one common mistake for writing a procedure
What is (any of the 4)
- Missing steps
- Not being specific enough
- Out of order
- Not numbering
An educated guess or prediction
What is a hypothesis?
Name the evidence. Video games are also a waste of time. To get a high score, you have to play a game for hours and hours. Studies show that most boys waste two hours a day on the games. Since we're in school for only six and a half hours a day, we should spend that time learning, not playing games.
What is, "Studies show that most boys waste two hours a day on the games"?
Hunter grew ten mint plants on his back porch. He grew each plant in its own pot, and each pot was the same size and shape. Hunter noticed that his plants did not grow many leaves, and he wanted to see if earthworms could help them grow more. To test this idea, Hunter divided his ten plants into two equal groups. For one group, he added three earthworms to the soil in each pot. He did not add any earthworms to pots in the other group.
Two months later, Hunter counted the number of leaves on each of the ten plants. He compared the number of leaves on the plants in each group.
What is the dependent variable?
What is the number of leaves?
True or false: I should never use because in my claim
What is true?
The process that science uses to solve problems
What is the scientific method?
Something that changes in an experiment
What is a variable?
Name the claim. A lot of people, especially young people, go through the day without having breakfast. Many people believe that it is not necessary, or say they don't have time for it, and begin their day with no meal. Everyone should eat breakfast before going to their activities.
What is, "People should (or need) to eat breakfast"?
Brandon noticed that some of the footballs his team used during practice were not fully inflated. He wondered whether fully inflated footballs would travel farther than footballs with a lower air pressure.
To find out, Brandon collected 20 standard footballs. He fully inflated ten of them to an air pressure of 13 pounds per square inch. He inflated the remaining ten to an air pressure of 10 pounds per square inch. Brandon used a football launcher to launch a ball across a football field. He measured the distance the football traveled and then launched the next ball. Brandon repeated this with all 20 balls.
What is the independent variable?
What is the air pressure of the footballs?
True or False: "My friend said football is fun" is valid evidence.
What is false?
What you are measuring, the results
What is dependent variable?
What makes a good procedure (must name 3 out of the 4 answers)
What is
- detailed (descriptive)
- numbered list
- every step starts with a verb
- in order
What is the evidence? In addition, it is impractical to enforce an absolute ban on cell phones in school. In a recent survey, this newspaper learned that 67% of the students in school own cellular phones, and more than half of these students carry these phones to school, despite the ban.
What is "In a recent survey, this newspaper learned that 67% of the students in school own cellular phones, and more than half of these students carry these phones to school, despite the ban"?
Xavier's grandmother suggested that soaking berries in hot water might help prevent the berries from getting moldy.
To test this idea, Xavier harvested fresh blackberries and divided them evenly into eight bowls. He filled four of the bowls with room temperature water and the other four bowls with water heated to 125°F. Xavier let all of the berries soak in the water for 30 seconds. Then, he poured out the water and dried the berries. Xavier placed the two groups of bowls in the refrigerator, keeping each group separate. After five days, Xavier counted the number of moldy blackberries in each bowl.
What is the dependent variable?
What is the number of moldy blackberries?
True or False: The dependent variable is graphed on the y axis
What is true?
What I am changing in an experiment
What is an independent variable?
Something that stays the same throughout the experiment
What is constant?
Name the evidence. Returning to the old system would give students continuity. From kindergarten on, children could look forward to nine years in the same school. A recent survey revealed that 52% of the parents felt that the short span of middle school did not give students a strong connection to the school, and that this lack of connection contributed to discipline problems.
What is "A recent survey revealed that 52% of the parents felt that the short span of middle school did not give students a strong connection to the school, and that this lack of connection contributed to discipline problems"?
Amanda was using steel to make rusted sculptures. After building each sculpture, she caused the steel in the sculpture to rust by placing it into a tub filled with salt water for eight hours. Amanda wondered if steel would rust faster submerged in vinegar instead of salt water.
To find out, Amanda cut ten squares of steel sheet metal and split them into two equal groups. She put one group of squares into a tub filled with salt water and the other group of squares into a tub filled with vinegar. Once an hour for eight hours, Amanda counted the number of rusted steel squares in each group.
What is the independent variable?
What is the type of liquid used?
True or False: A variable is something that you change during an experiment.
What is false? (A variable is something that changes during an experiment that you have no control over!!!
