A large assemblage of stars interstellar gas and dust
Galaxy
. Which color star is the hottest?
blue
What does the size of a star determine?
stages of its lifetime it will experience
What kind of stars does an elliptical galaxy consist of?
Most are small and yellow, meaning they consist mostly of older stars
Which student in the class is a legacy (meaning their parents went to the school)?
Jayden
Cool giant stars above the main sequence stars on the H-R diagram
Giant stars
What does a stars color tell you about?
surface temperature
What are the 2 parts to a black hole?
event horizon and singularity
What are active galaxies?
galaxies with notable activity of star formation, supernova, or energy release
Which student has been in the class from the very start?
Rigo
An expanding shell of gas ejected from a low mass star during the latter stages of its evolution
Planetary nebula
What are stars born from?
interstellar dust
After a star dies what 3 things can it become?
black hole, neutron star, or white dwarf
How are irregular galaxies usually created?
many times created when an elliptical and spiral galaxy collide creating an irregular shape
Which students is only here for 1 hour?
Michelle
A dying star that has collapsed to the size of earth and is slowly cooling off. Located at the lower left of the H-R diagram
White dwarfs
What causes a star to shine bright?
Nuclear fusion happening in their core
What are the 5 steps to a stars formation?
The central part of the nebula is denser (meaning has more stuff) which traps radiation creating a hot central bulge called a protostar
A protostar gathers more mass around itself to create a huge burning ball of gas
When the center reaches 10 million K, hydrogen fuse together to make helium nuclei
Starting this nuclear fuel marks the change from protostar to star
When the nuclear fusion becomes fast enough, the pull of more mass stops and size of the star remains stable
What are the 3 different kind of galaxies?
elliptical
spiral
irregular
Who are the only 2 students with colored eyes?
Jayden
Heayden
The remains of a super-giant star that has collapsed into itself. It’s so dense, and gravitational pull so intense, light itself cannot escape
black hole
What does the brightness of stars depend on
Energy they put out and distance from the Earth
What are the 5 stages to a stars life cycle?
Stage 1 is on the main sequence in which hydrogen will burn to sustain the star alive
Stage 2 is when a star becomes hotter and begins to burn helium
Stage 3 is when the star will start to lose fusion and begins to contract
Stage 4 is when the star contracts enough and gather ash at its center it will become so hot it turns blue
Stage 5 is when the star begins to shrink squeezing electrons within it, it will then explode forming a planetary nebula from which more stars and planets can form
What is the structure of our universe in order.
Planets
stars
solar systems
galaxies
groups
clusters
super clusters
universes
What 3 students are graduating this May?

Jayden
