What is a good definition for an isotope?
What is each of two or more forms of the same element that contain equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei, and hence differ in relative atomic mass but not in chemical properties.
100
How do you calculate the atomic mass of an element?
What is add the # of protons with the # of neutrons.

What sport did Mr. Taylor coach last year?

Baseball

200
Draw a neutral oxygen atom (Bohr) and an oxygen atom with a +2 charge.
The oxygen should have 8 protons (8 Neutrons) and 8 electrons and the oxygen with a +2 charge should have 6 electrons and 8 protons (with 8 Neutrons).
200
Draw a stable Calcium atom (Bohr Model) and a Calcium-44 Isotope:
Calcium Atom should have 20 Protons and 20 Neutrons and the Calcium-44 should have 20 Protons and 24 Neutrons. Both should have 20 electrons.
200
Carbon-12 has an abundance of 98.9% and C-13 has an abundance of 1.1%. What is the average atomic weight of Carbon?
Around 12.011 amu (atomic mass units)

What state is Mr. Taylor from?

Pennsylvania
300
Draw a Helium atom and a Helium atom with a -2 charge.
The Helium atom should have 2 protons and 2 neutrons with 2 electrons. The Helium with a -2 charge should have 2 protons and 2 neutrons and 4 electrons.
300
Draw a Chlorine atom (Bohr) and a Chlorine-37 Isotope.
The Chlorine atom should have 17 Protons and 18 Neutrons. The Chlorine 37 Isotope should have 17 Protons and 20 Neutrons. Both should have 17 electrons.
300
Chlorine-35 has an abundance of 75.77% in the atmosphere and Chlorine-37 has an abundance of 24.23%. What is the average atomic mass of Chlorine?
Around 35.48 amu.

What is Mr. Taylor's Favorite Halloween movie?

Tie. (Hocus Pocus OR the original Halloween)

400
Draw a cation of Silicon with a +2 charge.
The Silicon atom has 14 protons, 14 neutrons, and 12 electrons.
400
How do the chemical properties of different isotopes of the same atom compare with one another?
All isotopes of an atom have the same chemical properties. They are identical! They just have different masses.
400
Neon-20 has an abundance of 90.48% in the atmosphere, Neon-21 has an abundance of 0.27% and Neon-22 has an abundance of 9.25%. What is the average atomic mass of Neon?
Around 20.1877

What is Mr. Taylor's favorite activity to do in Ocean City?

Clamming!

500
What is the difference between Ions and Isotopes?
Ions have a different number of electrons than normal (# of electrons normally = # of protons). Isotopes are different versions, with different masses, of the same atom (same number of protons, different number of neutrons)
500
Draw K-39 and K-40.
K has 19 protons, so K39 should have 20 neutrons and K-40 should have 21 neutrons. Both have 19 electrons.
500
Oxygen-16 has an abundance of 99.76% in the atmosphere and Oxygen-18 has an abundance of 0.201%. Would you expect the average atomic mass of Oxygen to be closer to 16amu or 18amu? Why?
Because 99.76% of the Oxygen in the atmosphere is Oxygen-16, I would expect the average atomic mass to be closer to 16 amu.
